Help yourself to nature’s delicacies
As the powerful tidal waters recede, one of the world’s greatest culinary attractions is revealed – oysters. There are dozens of the salty delicacies within walking distance of the beach just a few kilometres north of Vadehavscamping. Pull on your wellington boots or waders, put a good knife and perhaps a lemon in your pocket and get ready to gorge on oysters that just couldn’t be any fresher.
On your way home from gathering oysters, you can pick seaside plantain and prepare it like kale – or saltwort and seashore aster to mix into a delicious salad – you won’t need to add salt!

Hike on the new Wadden Sea trail
Spain has the Camino de Santiago – or Way of St. James – and the Wadden Sea National Park will soon have the Wadden Sea trail, Vadehavs-stien. The 120 km-long trail through UNESCO-protected countryside will pass right by Vadehavscamping and already offers hiking and cycling routes in the unique landscape.
Enjoy the invigorating fresh air
An ancient myth says that the air around Vadehavscamping has a therapeutic effect. We can’t confirm the veracity of this myth, but we often hear from city-dwellers with respiratory conditions that they can feel the benefits of staying in the area. Some people believe that this is due to the unique seabed and current conditions in the Wadden Sea south of the Rømø causeway, which result in a high concentration of minerals such as iodine. All we can say is that all this fresh air makes you feel great!

Pop across the border
Just a few minutes’ drive from Vadehavscamping is the small German town of Rosenkranz. Here you can replenish your stocks in the border shops and enjoy a good meal at reasonable prices at local restaurants. And just on the other side of the town you can enjoy a cultural experience at the famous Nolde museum.
Find fascinating rocks and fossils
Around one kilometre from Vadehavscamping is a cliff that has remained untouched since the last ice age some 19,000 years ago. This cliff provides a unique insight into the world of geology. In the dark layers of the cliff there are remains of branches that beavers gnawed at 100,000 years ago. And on the beach you can find rocks and stones from different parts of Scandinavia – many of which contain exciting fossils.

Experience black sun
Nature’s magnificent showpiece takes place when starlings gather on the Tønder marshes to camp in the reed forests on the marsh. Here the birds enjoy feasting on the many crane fly and chafer grubs before continuing their journey further north in the spring and to the south in the autumn. There are few sights that can compare with the ballet performed by flocks of up to one million starlings in the sky as dusk settles over the marshes.
With a little luck, the black sun phenomenon can be experienced from March until the middle of April and again from August until October.
